Red Hook Ale Brewery was established in 1981 in Seattle, Washington by Paul Shipman and Gordon Bowker. Deciding factors for the start of Redhook was centered around the popularity of import beers at that time. Also, the pacific northwest had the highest per capita beer consumption in the country. The first pint of Red Hook was sold on August 11, 1982 and Red Hook hasn’t looked back since. In 1994 the company expanded into Woodinville, WA to increase production. Again in 1996 Red Hook opened another brewery, this time in Portsmouth, NH. The additional capacity provided by this brewery allowed Red Hook to expand distribution while continuing to maintain the high quality that is the hallmark of craft brewing. Red Hook products are brewed in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516, called Reinheitsgebot, which requires beer to be made from just four ingredients: malted barley, hops, water, and yeast.
