ACHTUGN! ACHTUGN! OKOTOBERFEST!
by Mike Casey
Ladies and Gentlemen! It is, once again, Mike’s favorite time of the year! Oktoberfest! While the days start to cool off, it is almost time to celebrate the end of a short but beautiful summer. Oktoberfest dates back to the 19th century and was started by a royal wedding celebration that culminated with horse races. The festival was an instant success and has adapted over the years. Oktoberfest was originally held mid October but the Germans learned all to often it was to cold or snowy and the festival was moved up to September. These days the 16-day festival begins on a Saturday and must end on the first Sunday of October. The beers are all lagers but vary in style. In the U.S. Octoberfest beer has been stylized as a rich amber lager usually to mimic German Marzen. Fortunately, the Octoberfest beers have just arrived at Westside Liquor! Who says you have to fly to Munich and wait until September 17 to drink Octoberfest beer? Come on down and pick up a six-pack today!
