Welcome to Westside Liquor’s monthly cigar newsletter. It is our goal to spread the good word about new and exciting products in each and every newsletter. We also will give staff reviews of featured products to help you pick out a new cigar. In future issues we will also delve into informative articles so we all can better understand the contributing factors involved in bringing us our favorite cigar.

Arturo Fuente

The first cigar was rolled in 1912 when Arturo Fuente started the A.Fuente Cigar Company in Ybor, Florida. However, in 1924, Arturo tragically lost his business to fire. In order to avoid bankruptcy Arturo worked for other cigar manufactures to pay off creditors. It was not until the 1940’s that Arturo was able to start again in Ybor, Florida. Business flourished and Arturo was able to expand operations. In the 1950’s he moved to a story building and again in the 1960’s he expanded to the historic “Charles the Great” cigar factory. This four story red brick building was built in 1895 and remains an architectural gem of Ybor city. During the 1980’s hand rolled cigars became a lost art in Tampa. In turn, the factories were moved to Nicaragua and Honduras. Shortly after the move, the Fuentes were forced to relocate to the Dominican Republic where it is now named the, Tabacalera A.Fuente. Were the company started with just seven employees, today they operate four factories with over twenty five hundred employees. A.Fuente is truly a family organization. Started by Arturo his sons Arturo Oscar Jr. and Carlos Fuente Sr. were born and grew up in the cigar trade. Today they manage the operations and groom Carlos Fuente Jr. for his turn to run the company. In 1994 Fuente operations ceased at the great old landmark. It was at this time that Arturo retired from the family business. Of course, not one to sit around, he immediately started the Tampa Sweethearts cigar company out of the “Charles the Great” Factory. This factory is a retail outlet and mail order business that is run by family members. Today his eldest son Arturo Oscar Jr. is the president of the company. Fuente cigars are medium bodied with sweet and spicy tones. Fuentes uses a Connecticut shade wrapper with Dominican fillers and binders. Excellent construction of the ever elusive cigars ensures quality time after time.
