Welcome to Westside Liquor’s monthly cigar newsletter. It is our goal to spread the good word about new and exciting products in each and every newsletter. We also will give staff reviews of featured products to help you pick out a new cigar. In future issues we will also delve into informative articles so we all can better understand the contributing factors involved in bringing us our favorite cigar.

Cohiba – In 1492 Columbus sailed the Pacific Ocean in search of new land. On his voyage he visited an island that is now known as Cuba. It was here that he and his crew were introduced to “Cohiba” by the natives of the island. It was a bunch of dried leaves that were smoked in a pipe called, “Tobacco.” On Columbus return to Spain he brought back some of the dried leaves. It is said that he mistakenly called the leaves tobacco. Hence, the inspiration for Cohiba cigars. The company printed its first label in 1968 and was originally reserved for Cuban diplomatic use only. To this day Cohiba remains the king of Cuban cigars. Unfortunately, we are not able to obtain Cuban cigars. However, Cohiba expanded production for the international market. Their cigars use Dominican Cuban-seed filler, Indonesian Jember binders and African Cameroon Wrappers to create a rich, creamy, perfectly balanced, medium body smoke. These are as good as it gets.

This month we are including another heavy hitter in the world of cigars. If Cigar making is an art form, then Romeo y Julieta are true Maestros.

Romeo y Julieta – One of the most popular cigar brands today are Romeo y Julieta. Created in 1873 Romeo y Julieta once published over two thousand cigar bands. Currently, there are approximately forty different shaped and sized cigars developed, an amazing achievement in the world of tobacco. These fine cigars have won gold medals world wide for their taste and quality. Romeo y Julieta is also credited for introducing the “Churchill” cigar, in honor of the cigars smoked by Sir Winston Churchill. Romeo y Julieta’s are made in the Dominican Republic using a blend of Brazilian and Dominican long filler, Connecticut binder and Sumatra wrapper. The cigars are famous for their complex, spicy medium body smoke.
