Hoya de Monterrey
Jose Gener, who was originally a leaf grower, founded one of the greatest Cuban cigar factories on the island of Cuba. He began producing Hoya de Monterrey cigars around 1960. The “Le Hoya” series of cigars were introduced in the mid-seventies. Hoya de Monterrey roughly translates as “the valley of Monterrey.” Which is a very fertile area of land in the Vuelta Abajo area of southwest Cuba. Hoyas are the connoisseur’s choice due to its distinctive flavor, silky richness and complexity of taste. The Hoya de Monterrey Double Corona is one of the most sought after Cuban cigars. Unfortunately, we cannot obtain Cuban cigars here in the U.S. However, since the 1970’s Hoya de Monterrey established an operation in the Honduras under the guidance of cigar master Estelo Padron. The Honduran cigars offer a wide range of shapes and sizes. The Hoya uses a complex blend of Nicaraguan, Honduran and Cuban-seed Dominican long fillers with a Connecticut binder. In it’s own full-bodied way the Honduran is, in the judgment of many, more Cuban in character than the Cuban Hoya.
