In future issues we will also delve into informative articles so we all can better understand the contributing factors involved in bringing us our favorite wine.

“Northwest wines on a roll”

This weeks wine class was on Washington and Oregon State wines. Our own Pacific Northwest floored not only my palate, but the whole group of tasters. The quality of these wines is outstanding, and the price is unbelievable. The late-harvest Riesling from Washington is fresh, fruity and balanced with vibrant acidity. The Cabs and Merlots from Washington were also packed with lush fruits and incredible balance. Of course the Pinot Noirs from Oregon only keep getting better and better. Sparkling wines from Oregon and Washington tasted superb for the price and were both made in the traditional method(secondary fermentation in the bottle). The main reasons for such excellent wines from these two areas are of course the climate, soil, exposure and rainfall(terrior). Did you know that Washington State receives two more hours of sunlight than California during its summer months? And Washington States wine regions are located on approximately the same latitude as the great wine regions of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Also the cool evenings do a great job in preserving the acidity in the grapes. With all of these conditions in balance, we get superb wines with a price tag that suits all. Here are some of the wines tasted at the class, and be sure to stop on in and try some for yourself.

Argyle Sparkling Brut 2000 – superb finesse with cassis and currant notes. $23.99

Hogue Late-Harvest Riesling 2004– citrus and lemon aromas with a nice balancing sweetness and peach flavors. A steal at this price. $9.99

Columbia Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 – 18 months in oak gives this incredible cab its roundness and the aromas and flavors of red and dark fruits sing in the palate. Tastes like a wine double or triple its price. $15.99

Hogue Merlot 2004 – this is one of the best bang for the bucks in my book. Great fruit and mouthfeel, with all there. $8.99

Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir 2003 – blackcherry, raspberry and a gorgeous silky texture in the mouth make this a favorite of mine. The complexity of this wine is well beyond its price tag. If you are looking for a pinot that is amazing look no further. $17.99.
