“Italy is back on Track”

After recently giving a class on Italian wines, I came to the conclusion that this land of vino is certainly producing some gems once again. Areas of note lie in Tuscany, Umbria, Sicily and the Veneto. Italy is using unique blends to add dimensions to the wines and in some areas falling suite to tradition. Two very different schools of thought in wine making, but a great variety for the palate. The wines were fresh with balancing acidity and had ample tannins for structure. These wines are very food friendly and of course go great with aged hard cheeses, grilled meats and sauteed vegetables in olive oil. Here is a list of five outstanding Italian beauties you should try when the mood moves you.

Antinori Toscana - this blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah is outstanding for the price. Succulent red fruits on the palate and chocolate and vanilla on the finish. Try with a ribeye off the grill. $24.99

Falesco Vitiano - merlot, cabernet sauvignon and sangiovese make this an interesting blend. Deep ruby/purple color with aromas of blackcurrant, licorice and herbs. Incredible texture and long finish. Try with a seasoned tri-tip off the grill. $14.99

Secco-Bertani Valpolicella Valpantena - made with the traditional corvina, rondinella and molinara grapes this wine sings with tradition. Aromas and flavors of cherry, spice and chestnuts jump out of the glass and onto the palate. This is a wine not to miss. Try with aged parmigiano-reggiano, grilled pork or beef. $16.99

Aviognesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - this wine is big and bold and shows what the prugnolo gentile grape is capable of creating. Fabulous aromas and flavors of coffee, blackberry and anise make this another fab wine. Try with that porterhouse or smoked ribs. $16.99

Cusumano Nero d’ Avola - to hot for good wine in Sicily? No way. This wine is full of spice and pepper and tons of red raspberry fruit. If you like shiraz/syrah you will love this one. Try with chicken off the grill, pork cutlets or lighter beef dishes. $12.99

Hope you enjoy these wines as much as I did and be sure to stop on in to a Westside Liquor nearest you.

Arrivederci!
