September has fallen upon us. The weather has cooled off, school has started and Oktoberfest season has arrived. Yes, Oktoberfest comes in September now. At Westside Liquor, we try to provide the largest selection of beer and Oktoberfest is no different. We currently have ten different Oktoberfest beers available for your purchasing pleasure.

Oktoberfest beers are traditionally a Marzen style. Marzen is the German word for March. These beers were traditionally brewed in March and lagered in cool caves to be drank in the fall. They are light to dark amber with a blend of malts and hops that leave a sweet, caramel/toffee flavor with very little bitterness.

For imports, we currently have a great selection.

-Spaten- This was the first Oktoberfest ever brewed. It was created in 1872 and continues to be available today. Amber in color with a medium body, the roasted malts give it a slightly sweet finish. Available in six packs.

-Becks-A true Marzen style, amber in color with a sweet malt finish. Available in six and twelve packs.

-Hacker-Pschorr-Another traditional Marzen style with a sweet malty finish. Available in six packs.

-Paulaner-See above descriptions. Available in six and twelve packs also, 5liter mini kegs.

The American Craft Brewers have been brewing Oktoberfest styles since craft brewing began its comeback in the mid 1980’s. There are some exceptionally great ones out there and maybe you have already found your favorite. If not, or if so, come in and try one of the following offerings.

-Bells-Copper amber in color, a well balanced malt flavor with plenty of body. It will leave you wanting more. Available in six packs. (Very limited supply!)

-Point- Marzen style combining Vienna malts with Hallertauer hops for a sweet finish. Available in six packs.

-Sam Adams-One of the more popular Oktoberfest beers every year, it is deep amber in color. They use a blend of five roasted barleys and German noble hops for a caramel/toffee finish. Available in six and twelve packs.

-Summit-Another popular Marzen style from right here in Minnesota. They blend three different malts with three different hops for a light amber color and smooth sweet finish. Available in six and twelve packs.

-Schell-Another Minnesota brew that blend five malts and two different hops for an amber color and you guessed it a sweet, caramel finish. Available in six and twelve packs.

-Leinenkugel-From our neighbors to the east, this is one of the lighter Oktoberfest beers available. Still a Marzen style, with a sweet smooth finish, it is on the light amber side. Available in six and twelve packs.

If you aren’t thirsty by now, you must be from a different planet. These beers will not be around for long so come in and get a couple. Your favorite might not be here the second time around! Hoist one for the season and we will talk again next month. Cheers!
