The Montecristo Tubos
This month we will be reviewing the Montecristo Tubos. Montecristo cigars, the most famous of the many famous Havana brands started only in 1935 as a new brand from Menendez, Garcia y Cia., then the owners of the H. Upmann brand. The name is reported to have been inspired by Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel Le Comte de Monte Cristo. With a strong marketing effort from Alfred Dunhill of London, Montecristo Cigars became the most popular of all Havana exports. There are no machine-made shapes in this range and the strength is medium; in fact, it has become the standard by which all other Havanas are now judged.
The Montecristo Tubos are a very mild cigar with real earthy, nutty undertones. It leaves a real smooth silky aftertaste in your mouth, almost a sweet taste. The Tubos has a very light ash coloring and has an exceptionally even burn. The draw is soft and effortless, making this cigar a pleasure to smoke. Even though the Tubos is not an oil infused cigar it carries some of the same characteristics as one. There is no evidence of any heavy spicing and it has a really sweet tasting draw. However since there is no oil on the wrapper you aren’t left with a really prominent sugar flavor on your lips. The Tubos is a real natural tasting cigar relying solely on the tobacco to provide its’ flavors, leaving this smoker with a very satisfied, money well spent feeling. I would recommend trying the Montecristo Tubos once, and just see if you can keep yourself from buying another.
With a ring of 42 and a length of 6 1/8th inches this Corona Grande is a very easy smoking cigar, and lasts just long enough to satisfy. These legal Cuban cousins are an excellent addition to any humidor, and come highly recommended by this Cigar smoker. Enjoy!
