Saint Luis Rey

The Saint Luis Rey cigars were brought back to the market in 2003 and haven’t looked back since. Altadis U.S.A. Co. is doing a fine job bringing back these hand rolled beauties. The two cigars we will be focusing on this month are the Rothchilde and the Belicoso both scored a 90 in “Cigar Insider”. Wrapped in a Nicaraguan wrapper and binder they are filled with a blend of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobacco.

The Rothchilde has a slightly uneven burn and didn’t leave much on the lips. The cigar had a very spicy draw with a very strong pepper taste. It also had a slight chocolate and creamy walnut flavor, with a coffee finish and a hint of caramel. With a ring of 54 and a length of 5” the Rothchilde smoked very slow and smooth. I would recommend this cigar to someone who enjoys a bolder heavier smoking cigar. This isn’t much of a cigar for a first timer, but if you wanted to broaden your cigar pallet this might be one to look into.

The Belicoso was a very spice orientated cigar as well it had an uneven burn and a light grey almost tan ash coloring. This cigar also had a bit of a malty chocolate taste but the presence of pepper and other spices really took over the flavor of the Belicoso. It was a very heavy smoking cigar again it would be a recommendation for a seasoned cigar smoker. With a ring of 52 and a length of 6 1/8” it also goes the distance and takes a little time to enjoy.

Both of these cigars are a spicy treat and would be enjoyed by anyone looking for a full flavored cigar that has real body and bite. Neither of these cigars is infused with flavored oils so what you taste in the smoke is what you get. However the flavors in these cigars will stay with the smoker long after the cigar has been extinguished.
