“Great Value Wines for the Summer”

More and more quality wine is being produced from all around the world than ever before. Whether it’s from an Old world producer like Italy or from a New world country like Argentina, the wine is flowing and the gems are abundant. I have the pleasure to taste so many fantastic wines on a weekly basis and in this newsletter I will share some of these delights with you. Since we are living in the “Golden Age” of wine it’s not too hard to find great values. Keep an open mind when shopping for wine and try not to box yourself in to one certain region or variety. Some of the tastiest bottles might just be coming from an area or grape you’ve never heard of. Also remember that some of the greatest wines have always been blends of different grapes and that winemakers from all across the globe are crafting blends full of flavors and at excellent price points. Two of the whites in this letter show this to definitely be true. Many people believe that good Pinot Noir can sometimes be hard to find at everyday affordable pricing but the Alfredo Roca from Argentina proves this to be wrong. Here’s a 100% Pinot Noir from South America for under 10 bucks. Yeah that’s what I like to see! Since its still summer I’ve included red wines that are not so big and bold and will pair with a wide array of foods. The Italian Barbera is one of the most food friendly reds in the world because of its acidity and low tannins. This bottle by Kroara is too good to be true for the price. Remember to give your wines a chill in the summer heat and hope you find something you like in these picks.

Kitchen Sink Artisan Blends White Wine, California - Some of the greatest wines in the world are made by blending different grapes together. This wine is a Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer. The Chardonnay gives weight and body while the Chenin Blanc adds crispness and the Gewurtraminer brings floral notes and ripe fruit. The wine has wonderful aromas of apricots, spice and honey. Mouthwatering flavors of melon, peach and apples explode on the palate with a nice touch of sweetness. Great all around sipper for the money.
Pair with - chicken curry, grilled shrimp or just by itself.

Rosenblum Cellars Chateau La Paws Cote Du Bone Blanc 2007, California - Kent Rosenblum left Minnesota in 1970 to go to California and join a veterinary practice. He soon fell in love with the wines of the area and the rest is history. Rosenblum is known for his outstanding Big Red Zinfandel's but this white Rhone blend from California over delivers and drinks like a wine triple its price. Aromas of pear, mango and melon fill the glass. Fresh flavors of peach, apple and vanilla coat the palate with nice crisp acidity on the finish.
Pair with - crab cakes, roast chicken or as an aperitif.

Alfredo Roca Pinot Noir 2006, Argentina - If your looking for a nice Pinot Noir and you don't want to break the bank here's the one for you. The wine is coming from San Rafael in southern Mendoza. This 100% Pinot Noir has elegance and structure with a dark crimson color. Aromas of black cherry and spice fill the air. Silky in the mouth with flavors of strawberry, cherry and plum. Nice finish and all put together for a great price.
Pair with - grilled chicken, baked salmon or stuffed mushrooms.

Kroara Barbera 2007, Piedmonte Italy - If you would like to explore the fabulous wines of this prestigous region of Italy and don't want to take out a loan, this is the gem for you. Brilliant dark ruby in color with aromas of ripe plums on the nose. Juicy flavors of cherry coat the palate with mouthwatering acidty. Great long finish and superb balance. This price is too good to beleive!
Pair with - grilled sausage, pizza or grilled pork loin.

Blue Cove Merlot 2007, South Africa - If you love Merlot and want to explore the wines of South Africa grab a bottle of Blue Cove. Brilliant dark ruby red color. Aromas of plum and blackberry fill the glass. Flavors of blackcurrant with hints of chocolate and coffee sing on the palate. Soft and velvety in the mouth with good length on the finish. The wine is aged for 8 months in French oak. Great wine for the money!
Pair with - pasta dishes in red sauce, pork roast or Manchego cheese.

Happy Sipping!
