“Spain keeps Rocking On”

I continually keep getting blown away by this country over and over again. These guys just don’t stop and the wine is only getting better. Less heralded regions are starting to put out wines with incredible structure and complexity and even though Spain is considered an Old World country all of these wines are made in a New World style. Fresh fruit, full bodied, new oak, and great mouthwatering acidity. One of the great gifts of Spain is that there are many old vines growing all over the country. Old vines contribute to the complexity and personality of a wine and most of these are made from old narly vines. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Monastrell are some of the fabulous varietals to check out and the upcoming regions to check out are Calatayud, Jumilla, La Mancha and Zamora. If you do like a more traditional style Rioja is an excellent region to go with and is also putting out gems at prices too good to be true. This article will focus on the more non traditional wines that are made in a more modern style. I feel that the reds are over performing the whites and will give you all red picks. All of these wines are varietally correct and over deliver in there price range. If you’re looking for some new and exciting big bold reds give one of these beauties a try and I think you will be quite satisfied.

1) Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines 2007 – Here is one of the greatest valued wines in my mind coming from Calatayud. Made with 100% Garnacha this wine has intense aromas of cherries and spice with flavors of plums, black cherry and white pepper. Great mouth feel with a nice velvety finish. Pair with pork loin and grilled steak and stews.

2) Bodegas Carchelo Monastrell, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Jumilla 2007 – This wine is comprised of three varietals and is full bodied and earthy. The wine displays aromas of blackberry, blueberry and has flavors of more dark fruits with a touch of leather, spice and oak on the palate. Great for under 20 bucks. Pair with BBQ ribs, burgers and lamb.

3) Volver 2005, La Mancha – The wine is made from 100% old vine Tempranillo and tastes like a wine double its price. Aromas of ripe plum and red fruits with mouth filling flavors of black cherries and exotic spices. Pair with Manchego cheese and robust meat dishes.

4) Triton Vinas Del Cenit 2005, Zamora – Hand harvested from 100 year old vines on the bank of the famous Duero river. This wine is big, bold and intense. Incredible aromas of blackberry and blackcherry sing out of the glass with succulent flavors of dark fruits, chocolate and sweet spice. A must try for all lovers of full bodied reds. Pair with ribs, steaks, hearty stews and Prima Donna cheese.

5) Cenit Vinas Del Cenit 2004, Zamora- This wine is made from old pre-phylloxera ungrafted Tempranillo vines. Heady aromas of dark fruits and red currents with complex flavors of black raspberries and spice coat the palate in a long finish. Drinking well now but can lay down for another 2-3 years. Pair with hearty, robust meats and aged cheeses.

Hope you find a favorite gem from Spain!
