“Sip into Summer”
The weather has finally warmed up and the sun is shining inviting us to fire up our grills and start getting together with family and friends outdoors. This is the season I tend to gravitate towards the rosés, refreshing whites and lighter reds. There's just something about cooking outdoors and conversing with friends while sipping on a thirst quenching beverage. It doesn't get much better than this. Here's a list of some delicious summer sippers that are sure to please a wide array of palates and accompany many different summertime cuisines.
1) Salvatore Principe Torrontes 2008, Argentina – If you're looking for a new and exciting white than check this one out. Aromas of apricot, honey, spice with flavors of tropical fruits, melon and citrus. Fruity but dry on the palate. Great summertime sipper! Pair with salads and grilled chicken.
2) Indaba Chenin Blanc 2007, South Africa – This South African gem over delivers and will make a fabulous summertime wine. Aromas of watermelon and pineapple with flavors of apples and honey on the palate. Crisp and refreshing. Pair with shrimp, light pasta dishes and grilled red snapper.
3) Domaine Des Cassagnoles, 2008, France – This white from south France is killer for the price. The wine is a unique blend of Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng and Sauvignon. The nose has grassy aromatics with fresh fruits and sage. Mouthwatering flavors of lime and lemons explode on the palate. Crisp and clean and sure to please all. Pair with grilled shrimp or scallops.
4) Toad Hollow “Eye of the Toad” Dry Pinot Noir Rosé, 2007, California – Year after year this rosé is fabulous and is a personal favorite. Aromas of cherry and strawberry with fresh flavors of raspberry and more red fruits. Nice balance with juicy fruits and food friendly acidity. Pair with salami, grilled chicken or pork chops.
5) Protocolo Tempranillo 2006 , Spain – Here's a great all around food friendly red at a great price. This 100% Tempranillo from Spain has wonderful aromas of cherry and spice with flavors of black cherry, vanilla and a touch of oak. Pair with grilled chicken, grilled pork, Tri-Tip or some Manchego cheese. Medium-bodied.
