BACKYARD BEER PANEL
With a foot of snow in the back yard and cannot build a (legal) fire big enough to provide adequate warmth to conduct business, so off to the man cave again. On the other hand for us die hard Minnesotans it is always grilling season. Good ole Dan brought over some salmon and Al brought his secret marinade for a wonderful compliment to this beer. Everyone brought something to share to make this beer review my favorite for the year (thank you friends).

Summit Unchained 05 Imperial Pumpkin Porter Brewed by our local friends at: Summit Brewing Co.St Paul, Minnesota USATHE STATS:Style Herb/Spice/Vegetable (a full meal) Seasonal: Special IBU: 40 ABV: 7.5
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION The fifth beer in the Unchained Series will be from brewer Nate Siats and is an Imperial Pumpkin Porter. Nate is a big fan of pumpkins and wants to do this up right, starting with where the pumpkins come from. The small, local, organic farm that is providing the pumpkins just so happens to be owned by Charles Jones, one of the strong fellas who work on our keg line! Nate's desired flavor profile in his own words- A dark, chocolaty, full bodied beer with a slight bitter after taste. Evenly spiced with a hint of pumpkin, you would think you were sitting down for thanksgiving dessert. Perfect for a cool, fall afternoon. |

I was excited when I heard we were doing a Porter beer I am a huge fan of the dark, heavy, hard hitting meal in a bottle beer. I have been known to make beer magically disappear and I believe I was the first to have my review completed (shazam). The only downside to this beer for me was I was expecting the full flavor of biting into a piece of pumpkin pie and this fell far short of that. As far as this experience goes this beer was on the mark for the full body but surprisingly light and mellow for the taste. Carmel / chocolate hint of anise and pumpkin flavors are not overpowering but well blended. This is an excellent porter to have a couple relaxing beers before during or as a dessert after a meal. This was pared well with all the food that showed up at the house for this party (beer tasting). Mike excellent choice on the meatballs / barbeque sauce the thick sweet sauce matched well. Al the wild rice hot dish and your secret glaze for the salmon also worked very well and Dan thanks for the salmon it was well worth firing up the grill.
As always I want to thank the panel in no particular order Duane Counter (DOC), Christine Vorpahl, Mitch Sloan, Tim Gilbert, SFC Mike St Marie (Ret), Dan "Strackman" Strack, Al Al-Rifai and special guest appearances from Kristina Sloan and Kim Mackinac Wieneke. There is a very special thanks owed to my "sweet wife" Jodi for putting up with this monthly invasion.
