BACKYARD BEER PANEL

Winter in Minnesota, love it, or hate it, or fly south to forget about it for a little while, by now most of us are looking forward to spring.  I cannot wait to move this back outside (man cave is feeling a little small) just because beer never tasted better than in the great outdoors (even if it is in my backyard).

Here we go...

Summit Maibock

Brewed by:

Summit Brewing Company

St. Paul,Minnesota USA

Style: Heller Bock

Seasonal: Spring

Best Served in:  Lager glass, Shaker, Stein

ABV: 7.1%  IBU 40

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Early German monks created "bock" beer as a hearty beverage that would help sustain them during their Lenten fasts. The first bock beers were dark, but soon came "blonder" styles such as Maibock. Maibocks have a rich, malty, full flavor. And, since our first brew house was from Heimertingen in Bavaria, we've honored that heritage by giving the name to our first lager beer. "Bock" by the way, is German for "male goat." It doesn't make sense to us either.

It states in the description that the German Monks created "bock" beer as a hearty beverage that would help sustain them during their Lenten fasts.  This was a little confusing at first but gained much clarity (after a couple) and realized that those tricky Germans monks have created another reason to drink beer and yet still comply with their beliefs.  My friend DOC stated "I drink beer so you may read about it" seemed to be an extremely wise statement at the time (after a couple).  This beer has a 7.1% kicker which will make any one feel wiser beyond their years and by the end of the tasting I do believe we were all "brilliant" with wit and charm.  I did have to curb the panel a bit when the comments came out "hey Pat, can we write down it looks like beer, it tastes like beer, and it smells like beer..." I gave them a "no silly rabbits get back to work drinking that beer" It is a terrible job but we are glad to do it...

Those guys scored an average score of 3.31 (ratebeer.com) and we rated it a little higher than them because we like beer more than them.  This is the kind of beer that you can drink in multiples.  This has a beautiful copper color and a lacy head that sticks to the glass.  It was not too bitter goes down smooth but be wary of the alcohol content. There was a surgeon generals warning against any heavy activity like doing the dishes or operating any heavy equipment. (my sweet wife will love me for that).

As always I want to thank the Panel: Mike St Marie, Tim Gilbert, Dan (Strackman) Strack, Christine Vorpahl (Teener), Mitch "The Tasteometer" Sloan (he made me say that), Telal Al-Rifai, Duane Counter (DOC) and Beasty me (you would understand the name if you ever seen me get rid of beer)

Our quotable quote comes from the group this month:

It may not be enough to keep the ground hog from going back down his hole - but I'll stick around for another.

Thanks DOC
