Rocky Patel Edge Cut Battalion
August is here and there is a lot going on this month. Everything from Sturgis to getting the kids ready for school, one thing that we should remember is to take some time for ourselves, sit back, and relax. So this month I did a little research before selecting a cigar to share with you and one of the newer cigars to enter our humidors have been getting rave reviews. This collaboration cigar from Patel and Nestor Plasencia produced the Edge Cut line and scored an awesome 91 by Honduran Cuban-Seed Corojo wrapper along with a Nicaraguan binder and filler that is labeled "a secret" to its origins but aged 5 years. This cigar is sure not to disappoint.
Looking over the cigar in the pre light inspection. The first thing that you will notice is that this cigar is a little rough to the touch and a few veins that pop out at you. Nevertheless get this cigar out under any source of light and the oily sheen will come out. Looking at the band of the cigar it was put in the same place as the NUB Cain that I reviewed last month at the bottom of the foot.
Lighting up this cigar was a synch I left the torch lighter in the house and decided to light this cigar with a wooden match. The initial flavors that I got were unmistakably pepper spice and earth along with a slit creaminess with a touch of honey. These flavors remain through the first third of the cigar.
Given the reputation of this cigar and the way it was heading through the first third, I realized that the full flavor of this cigar needs a good strong drink to accompany it; Woodford Reserve on the rock will do just fine.
The second third of this cigar the peppery spice moves to the background to reveal a leathery, earthy flavor, classic for the Corojo wrapper. So far, this cigar is staying true to its promise with a perfect burn, no touch ups or relights at all.
Smoking through the last third of this cigar. The pepper mellow just a little bit and a little honey sweetness come through which lasted to the nub.
Over all this was a great quality smoke, above average construction the burn is excellent and flavors stand out wonderfully, and over a two-hour smoke time. I will give a warning out there though, although this is not the strongest cigar in our humidor, most people that are new to cigars might find this a bit strong and in your face. Therefore, weather you are sitting around a fire in your back yard or riding a Harley through South Dakota, this cigar will not let you down.
