"Fabulous Wine Values from Washington State"

If there's one place that continually blows me away with their wines it's our own Washington State. From reds to whites the terrior seems to be near perfect for many different grape varieties. From Syrah to Riesling and all the way in between you must seek out some of these gems. Also the Merlot from this state is on par with almost any region in the world. The structure, fruit, acidity and depth to these wines are stellar. We even have Germans coming over to make Rieslings because of the quality of the fruit. Regions like Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and Yakima Valley are churning out wines with incredible character and complexity. Low rainfall, lots of hot sunshine and the right soil contribute to the outstanding fruit quality. On my last visit to the state I tasted some great Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Lemberger. For whites the Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Rieslings were beautifully balanced with mouthwatering acidity and ripe fruit. In the last nine years this state has had a string of killer vintages. Starting with 2000 to 2009 all of these vintages have scored 90 points or higher. So don't be afraid to try some different vintages, there all very good. If " you're" looking to tour the state I'd suggest flying into Seattle and work your way down to the South East. This way you will get to see much of the state and different wine regions. Be sure not to miss Walla Walla Valley and Red Mountain. Here is a list of some of my favorites in different price ranges.

1)      Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills Merlot 2008 - This wine drinks like one double its price. Aromas of blueberry and spice float out of the glass. A velvety mouth feel with flavors of cassis, plum and more blue berry coat the palate ending with a super long finish. Definitely a must try!
Pair with pork tenderloin. Last vintage made Wine Spectators Top 100.

2)      Hogue Genesis Syrah 2007 - Once you step into the Genesis label by this winery its serious stuff. The wine has a brilliant purple color with aromas of strawberry, blackberry, spice and a touch of pepper. Tons of blackberry flavors followed by a hint of sweet spice. Super concentrated with nice length.
Pair with venison, chili or porterhouse. 90 points WS.

3)      Desert Wind Ruah 2008 - This wine is styled like a Bordeaux in that it is comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It sees a year in American and French oak which imparts roundness and adds complexity. Super deep dark color with aromas of black cherry, black currant, vanilla and mocha. Robust flavors of plums, raspberry and anise fill the palate in a super lushness. A real winner for under 25 bucks! A fun winery to visit.
Pair with tri-tip or some gorgonzola melted on a Fillet Mignon. Gold Medal Northwest Wine Summit 2010.

4)      Chateau Ste. Michelle Pinot Gris 2008 - This is the same grape as the Italian Pinot Grigio but made in a more rich style. Always a killer buy year after year. Brilliant golden color with aromatics of peach and pear. Mouthwatering flavors of melon, fig, apple and more pear coat the palate with good balanced acidity. A real crowd pleaser "that's" way too easy to sip.
Pair with shrimp scampi, seared scallops or creamy Havarti.

5)      Columbia Winery Cellarmaster's Riesling 2009 - A great value year after for lovers of superb domestic Riesling. Radiating light color with aromatics of lime and apples. Mouthwatering flavors of peach and apricots followed with a semi- sweetness. Nice crisp acidity on the end.
Pair with spicy Thai foods, baked ham or baked brie topped with apricot marmalade.

Hope you find a gem in the bunch!
