If your looking for a wine to go with a certain desert look no further. Desert wines come in many forms and from many different countries.
One of the most famous desert wines comes from Portugal and is called Port. This is a fortified wine, which means that it is fortified with pure brandy spirits before fermentation is complete. The spirits stop fermentation in its tracks and therefore the sweetness is saved. Ports are great with nuts, chocolate, dried fruits and salty cheeses. Ruby ports give you that cherry and spice flavors while Tawny ports taste of caramel, toffe and coffee flavors.
Another great desert wine is Eiswein also known as Ice wine. This wine is made from very ripe frozen grapes and is high in both sweetness and acidity. Ice wines are great by themselves for desert. Another excellent desert wine is a Muscato. Try a still one or a semi-sparkling one from Italy. Great with some biscotti after a meal.
Here are a few great picks to check out.
Noval Raven Ruby - nice spice and cherries on the palate. Try with chocolate.
Whiskers Blake - a beautiful tawny from down under. Aged for over fifteen years. Sip by itself with friends.
Inniskillin Ice Wine - nectar of the Gods. This is an experience you should indulge in at least once in your life time.
St.Spery Moscato - try with some fresh fruit or as a starter for the party.
Desert wines are fun and can make a boring dinner come to life. Stop on by a Westside Liquor store nearest you and we'll show these beauties to you. Unt until next time remember to "keep one hand on the corkscrew and the other on the bottle".
